Summer Institute Online
Institute Scholars will be available throughout the week to answer questions and staff will be available by phone and email if questions or concerns arise.
Day One: Disability, identity, intersectionality
- Day One Learning Outcomes
- Scholars will describe the frames of reference for identity, disability, and intersectionality.
- Scholars will summarize how disability, identity, and intersectionality can be translated into their teaching and the K-12 curriculum.

- Introduction to the Institute and to each other
- 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
- Dr. Aja Reynolds will lecture on the fundamental concepts for the institute: identity, intersectionality, disability
- 12:15 p.m. - 12:20 p.m.
- Break
- 12:20 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
- Scholars will independently read materials on identity and intersectionality provided by Dr. Reynolds
- 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
- Lunch break
- 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Dr. Reynolds will lead the Scholars in activities
- 4:30 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.
- Community building activity
- 4:45 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
- Participants will do independent reflections or summaries on translating identity, intersectionality, and disability into their curriculum and teaching

Day Two: Disability identity in literature
- Day Two Learning Outcomes:
- Scholars will describe frames of reference of disability identity in children's literature.
- Scholars will use strategies for analyzing disability identity representations in children's literature.
- Scholars will summarize how disability identity in children's literature can be translated into their teaching and the K-12 curriculum and their week-long projects.

- Dr. Gabel and Dr. Reynolds welcome participant to Day #2, review of agenda and learning outcomes

- Dr. Paulin's presentation
- 12:10 p.m. -1:30 p.m.
- Scholars will independently read materials provided by Dr. Paulin
- 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
- Lunch
- 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
- Dr. Crawford-McKinney lectures on children's literature and leads Scholars in activities using primary sources in the WSU children's literature library
- 4:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.
- Dr. Reynolds will summarize content covered in Day #2
- 4:15 p.m.- 5:30 p.m.
- Dr. Gabel and/or Dr. Reynolds will be available to assist Scholars in planning their week-long projects; submit ideas to canvas
- 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Day Three: Disability identity in media
- Day Three Learning Outcomes:
- Scholars will identify frames for reference for disability identity as represented in media.
- Scholars will use strategies for analyzing identity representations in primary media sources.
- Scholars will summarize how disability identity in media can be translated into their teaching and the K-12 curriculum and their week-long projects.

- Dr. Gabel and Dr. Reynolds welcome everyone to Day #3, review of agenda and learning outcomes for Day #3

- Dr. Beth Haller lectures on her research into the media and disability/identity
- 12:00 p.m. -1:00 p.m.
- Lunch
- 1:00 p.m. - 2:15 p.m.
- Scholars read and review the materials Dr. Haller provided
- 2:15 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
- Dr. Haller leads Scholars in small group activities with primary sources to research disability, identity, intersectionality in media
- 3:00 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.
- Dr. Reynolds and Dr. Gabel summarize the day's content, gives directions for next steps
- 3:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Scholars do independent work on their week-long projects

Day Four: Disability identity in history
- Day Four Learning Outcomes:
- Scholars will describe frames of reference of disability identity in history.
- Scholars will use strategies for analyzing identity representations in primary historical sources.
- Scholars will summarize how disability identity in history can be translated into their teaching and the K-12 curriculum and their week-long projects.

- Dr. Kim Nielsen will lecture

- Scholars read and review the materials provided by Dr. Nielson
- 2:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
- Dr. Nielsen leads Scholars in analysis of primary history sources
- 3:00 p.m. - 3:05 p.m.
- Break
- 3:05 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.
- Dr. Reynolds leads summary of the day's content, gives directions for next steps
- 3:15 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
- Dr. Gabel and/or Dr. Reynolds are available to Scholars working independently to reflect on learning from Days #1-4, work on week-long projects, prepare presentation of projects. Dr. Gabel's support will be provided to individuals or small groups.
- 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
- Five Scholars present their week-long projects.
- 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Day Five: Intersectionality and disability identity
- Day Five Learning Outcomes
- Scholars will synthesize how disability identities intersect with other identities.
- Scholars will use intersectional analyses with primary sources.
- Scholars will summarize how disability identity in primary sources can be translated into their teaching and the K-12 curriculum and their week-long projects.

- Dr. Gabel and Dr. Reynolds leads welcome, overview of agenda and learning outcomes for Day #5
- 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
- Dr. Reynolds returns to lead Scholars in activities that return to the Institute's fundamental themes—disability, identity, intersectionality—and how they can be translated into K-12 teachers' curriculum and teaching; Two 2021 Scholars will join small groups to translate how they use disability and identity in their teaching.
- 12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.
- Lunch
- 1:15 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
- Scholars present their week-long projects in three groups of 10 Scholars in each group. (5 Scholars already presented on Thursday).
- 3:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.
- Dr. Gabel and Dr. Reynolds summarize the week's learning outcomes, the important milestones of the week, important things Scholars are taking back to their schools
- 3:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
- Mini celebration, awarding certificates
- 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
